Gideon and the
An easy craft would be to take a small dollar store jar and have
the children decorate it. We did a fun craft that wasn't related
to the story this time. We took accorns, and hot glues them to a
string and decorated them. Probably would've been nice with a
devotion about seeds - parable of the soils or soemthing, but
nevertheless, it was a fun craft.
This story continues where the last one
left off. Gideon is now convinced that the Lord is calling him to
deliver the Israelites from the oppression of the Midianites. But
God isn't done there. Next, God wants the Israelites to
understand that God doesn't need man to accomplish his purposes.
He can do miraculous works with just a few people, He doesn't
need great armies. So God wants to sift through the Israelites.
If you want, depending on how many kids you have, you can set
them up in a big group and ask how many would be scared (raise your
hands). Those that are scared can sit down, those that arent
scared come with me to the front of the room. Just like this, God
reduced Gideon's forces from 22,000 to 10,000. Next, God
seperated them from 10,000 down to 300 based on the way they drank
water. You can do something similar to divide up the kids (like
telling them to think of a number 1 or 2 and picking the smaller amount
of children-or if you have too many just pick a couple kids). So
now you should only have a couple kids left, and a lot of kids that
weren't "volunteers". Everyone else that is left will be your
You should now equip the Israelites with a jar, a
torch (glow stick) and a trumpet (we used vevulzas from our nearby five
below). You will explain that there were other people with the
Midianites and they spoke different languages. Does anyone know
someone who doesn't speak English? It's hard to talk with them
right? So God had the Israelites go to the top of a hill in three
groups so they looked surrounded. Then Gideon had them smash
their jars, show their torches and blow their horns. The
Midianites jumped out of their tents and thought they were being
attacked, so they all were running around and fighting each other while
Gideon and his troops just hung out on top of the hill and waited.
Eventually, Gideon and his troops waited until there weren't a
lot of troops alive and then they killed the leaders of the Gideonites.
So God used just a few people to defeat an army of over 100,000!
are things that you will see happen in your life and think there is no
way that I can overcome this. Maybe in school you will have a
test that is really difficult, or maybe someone is picking on you at
school. Well God knows what is going on, and He can help and
deliver you despite all odds.
